Comprehensive Examinations

Your sight is irreplaceable. As a result, it is very important to have your eyes examined regularly. A modern eye exam involves far more than simply reading letters from a chart. Our comprehensive exam will measure not only the status of your visual performance but also the physical health of your eyes. Our doctors are extensively trained in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, infections, and ocular injuries.

Medical Eye Care

If you have something going on with your eyes beyond blurred vision, we can see you for a medical office visit and will likely see you the same day. This type of visit is problem- focused and will be billed under medical insurance when applicable. Some examples of medical office visits include:

- Eye or eyelid infections
- Eye injuries
- Foreign objects in the eye
- Chemical exposure
- Flashes of light/floaters in vision
- Sudden change or loss of vision
- Double vision

Pediatric Eye Care

All children, even those with no signs of trouble, should have their eyes checked at regular intervals. Some children are more likely to have  eye problems. If your child has any of the following factors, they may be more likely to develop a vision problem:

- Your child was born prematurely
- You have a family history of eye problems (such as childhood cataract, lazy eye (amblyopia), misaligned eyes or eye tumors
- Your child has had an eye injury (problems resulting from childhood eye injuries may develop much later in life)
- If your child has any of these risk factors, call Briggs Vision Group to schedule an evaluation.
- Children with diabetes should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year.

At Briggs Vision Group we exam children ages three and up.

Comprehensive Vision Testing

Our comprehensive exam will include testing of your pupil reaction, corneal measurements, and dilation of the pupil enabling a view of internal structures. Other testing will include cataract and glaucoma evaluations, assessment of binocular vision, depth perception, and color vision screening. Automated and objective testing will also be performed to assess possible refractive error which may require correction with glasses or contact lenses.

Medical History

It is important for our doctors to be aware of your general health as well as any family medical history. The eyes can be affected by systemic disease as well as prescription and non-prescription medications; therefore, your examination will include a thorough review of your medical history.

Digital Retinal Imaging

Your eye exam is not complete without a look inside your eyes! Optomap ultra- widefield retinal imaging is a high-resolution photographic system which details the retina and is used to establish a wellness baseline and follow critical retinal developments throughout our patient’s lifetime.

This full color digital retinal imaging system enables us to see more details of your retina and diagnose: hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, diabetes, brain tumors and to help prevent strokes and many other health problems.

Routine eye examinations should always include a careful assessment of the retina to screen for abnormalities or disease. The sensitive tissue that makes up the retina is susceptible to a variety of diseases that can lead to partial loss of vision or even complete blindness. Early detection of any retinal abnormality is important in the diagnosis and management of eye disease.

We can better prevent or reduce vision loss in our patients with a simple, quick, and patient-friendly diagnostic tool such as digital retinal imaging.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) - Eye Imaging Test

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a type of non-invasive imaging technology. OCT works by using rays of light to take an extremely detailed picture of the retina or optic nerve. The retina is the very back of your eye which is made up of millions of cells that measure changes in light. 

The macula is the most central part of the retina and is used for fine detail vision. OCT is a unique test allowing our doctors to look at cross-sectional layers of the retina and optic nerve. OCT allows our doctors to measure the thickness of each layer to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular swelling, macular holes, and optic nerve damage. 

OCT can detect even the earliest signs of glaucoma before you are able to notice symptoms in your everyday life. This allows our doctors to start treatment early to help preserve your eyesight. OCT has revolutionized the detection and monitoring of retinal and optic nerve disorders by allowing us to track the progression of your eye disorder and administer the most appropriate treatment for your unique circumstances.

No radiation or x–rays are used in the OCT so there are no harmful side effects. The process of taking the pictures is brief and completely pain free.

Other Specialized Testing

Briggs Vision Group prides itself on staying ahead of the technological curve when it comes to instrumentation. We have the latest technology allowing us to perform many specialized tests. In addition to optical coherence tomography and digital retinal imaging we regularly perform corneal topography, visual field analysis, corneal pachymetry, and corneal tonometry.

Corneal Topography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, the outer structure of the eye. Since the cornea is responsible for almost 70% of the eye's refractive power, a topography is sometimes necessary in determining your prescription and understanding the quality of your vision. This test can therefore be a valuable aid in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of conditions; in assessment and evaluation of refractive surgery such as LASIK/PRK; or in assessing the fit of contact lenses. This procedure is carried out in seconds and is completely painless.

Visual Field Analysis is a method of measuring an individual's scope of vision. This subjective examination of the central and peripheral vision maps the field of vision of each eye individually. Visual field testing is most frequently used to detect signs of optic nerve head damage secondary to glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, eyelid conditions such as ptosis or drooping of the eye lids, optic nerve disease, and diseases affecting the visual pathways within the brain.

Corneal Pachymetry is used to measure the thickness of the cornea. Pachymetry is particularly important prior to a LASIK procedure for ensuring sufficient corneal thickness to prevent abnormal bulging of the cornea, a potential complication known as ectasia. Corneal pachymetry is also considered an important test in the early detection of glaucoma.

Corneal Tonometry is used to determine the intraocular pressure (IOP), the pressure inside the eye. This is an important test used to screen for glaucoma and in the management of patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Briggs Vision Group is proud to use the newest iCARE tonometer in which a very light probe is used to make momentary and gentle contact with the cornea. The measurement is barely noticed by the patient making IOP measuring a pleasant experience.
